We have provided just a flavour of the many local attractions, facilities and shopping in the local area. The tourist information centre is at the Cartgate Picnic Area on the A303, just west of Compton Pauncefoot.

RESTAURANTS AND PUBS

Most local pubs serve excellent meals not just bar snacks. My favourite local pubs within walking distance are:-

The Camelot, South Cadbury www.thecamelotpub.com 1 mile;

The Kings Arms, Charlton Horethorne www.thekingsarms.co.uk 2.5 miles;

The Old Inn, Holton www.theoldinnrestaurant.co.uk 2.5 miles;

Queens Arms, Corton Denham www.thequeensarms.com, 3 miles.

Further afield are:

The Stag at Yarlington, www.stagsheadinn.co.uk,
the Monague Inn at Shepton Montague, www.themontagueinn.co.uk,
The Stapleton Arms at Buckhorn Weston, www.thestapletonarms.com, The Mitre Inn at Sandford Orcas, www.themitreinn.co.uk, The Red Lion at Babcary, www.redlionbabcary.co.uk – as you can see you are spoilt for choice!

Recommended local restaurants include at the chapel, Bruton, www.atthechapel.co.uk, The Green Sherborne, www.greenrestaurant.co.uk ,and Little Barwick House, Barwick www.littlebarwick.co.uk; to name a few.

There are many nearby take away food restaurants in Sherborne and Wincanton, some of which deliver. These include Indian, Chinese, Fish and Chips, Pizza and Kebabs.

The Chapel Cross Tea Rooms in South Cadbury, an easy walk away, is open from Wednesday to Sundays for scrummy cakes and light meals in an ancient chapel.

All telephone numbers and some sample menus are available in the cottage in your welcome pack.

SHOPPING

You will want to know that Compton Pauncefoot does not have a shop or a pub but…

There is extensive general shopping in Wincanton (7 miles). As you arrive you will find a large Morrisons with petrol. Next door is Lidl. Go into the town, on the one way system and you will find an excellent butcher, Andrew Barclay, in the High Street, as well as a local beautician, Essence of Beauty, an Ironmonger, Florist, Post Office and a couple of banks.

Rather more sophisticated shopping in the nearby historic towns of Sherborne with its Abbey, Shaftesbury, Bath & Wells, which are all within in easy reach of the cottage.

Clarks Village www.clarksvillage.co.uk, at Street is an excellent discount outlet centre, and Kilver Court www.kilvercourt.com is the local designer fashion centre in Shepton Mallet.
