Biggin Hill Airport

INTRODUCTION OF AN INSTRUMENT APPROACH PROCEDURE TO RUNWAY 03

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is an Instrument Approach Procedure?

An instrument approach procedure guides an aircraft along a specific approach path to the airport’s runway, by interlocking with that aircraft’s on-board navigation system.

Why are you doing this now?

As the aircraft using the airport become more sophisticated, we need to upgrade our facilities to meet user requirements.

Why wasn’t there an IAP to Runway 03 before?

See point (2) above.

Who are you consulting with?

We’re consulting with MPs, local government, neighbours, local and special interest groups, and airport users.

How long does the consultation last?

The consultation period is three months. Finishing in mid-February 2016.

Where can we find more information?

Please go to this page on the airport’s website.

Is the consultation connected to further expansion of Biggin Hill Airport?

No. This is about the airport investing to further improve the service it offers to its customers.

Will more people be overflown?

No – quite the reverse. The route shown in the consultation document has been designed to reduce the number of people and properties overflown.

Why can’t the aircraft fly higher?

They will fly as high as possible, consistent with the international standards for aircraft approaching a runway, along a route that has been designed to work with the approach and departure tracks of other airports in the area, notably Heathrow and Gatwick.

What will be the effects on Gliding at Kenley and other General Aviation activity?

As part of the consultation process, we are working with the gliding and private flying groups who share the busy airspace in the vicinity of Biggin Hill Airport, to ensure that the wishes of all local airspace users are taken into account.

Does this mean bigger aircraft?

No. The proposed new route has been designed to cater for the current aircraft types using the airport.

Will aircraft also depart along this route as well?

No. This route is for arriving aircraft only who require to land on runway 03.
